The Cloud

The cloud is a building you will never tour, full of servers, with a credit card form on the door.

Nothing is floating. There is a warehouse, in a town you have never visited, racks of machines, fans roaring. You rent a slice over the internet instead of owning the box. AWS, Cloudflare, Vercel, "just put it on the cloud" — you are renting electricity, disk, and a grown-up's network.

• Save a file and you are copying it onto shelves in that building, often on more than one machine so one failure does not eat the demo.
• Run an agent and a chip in that warehouse does the thinking and sends the answer down the wire.

Owning machines is a hassle: buy, power, cool, replace, guess how many. Renting a slice means someone else carries that, and you pay for what you use. For a solo builder, that is the difference between a server room and a credit card.

Different slices, same warehouse

• A server is one rented computer.
• Serverless is pay-per-wake, not pay-per-month.
• Object storage is the shelf your uploads sit on.
• A CDN is copies parked near the judge.
• Docker is the sealed kit those machines open.

The builder's deploy options are just "which landlord." The CLI can stamp that choice. Your app on localhost is imaginary to a judge. The cloud is how it becomes a URL that works when your laptop is closed.

It is not magic and it is not free. Read the bill before the demo goes viral. A forgotten GPU job is a very expensive overnight.

What this unlocks

Once you see the warehouse, "it's in the cloud" stops being weather. It is rented computers, reached over the internet, that you do not babysit. You can deploy without buying a box. You can hand a judge a link. You can run an agent that is not tied to the chair you're in. The sky was never the point. The lease was.
